Living In Dundee

At Cairn we know that the market is such just now that it would be madness to make a decision as big as buying or investing in a property without doing a little research first of all. Previously we’ve created blog posts about living in Glasgow and about living in Edinburgh. Although reading this post isn’t the only research you should do we believe it’s a great starting point and will also give a flavour of what it’s like to live in Dundee. Scotland’s city of discovery is an ever-evolving city. Often in the shadow of Scotland’s other cities, Edinburgh, …

Thinking of becoming a landlord? It’s perhaps not as straight forward to you as first thought. Do you know just how much you’d be responsible for? Deciding whether or not to take the plunge into becoming a landlord isn’t a decision you should take lightly. With this in mind, we’ve created this blog post on legislation so you know exactly what’s expected of you. The Anti-Social Behaviour (Scotland) Act 2004 introduced the Landlord Registration Scheme and since 30 April 2005 most private landlords in Scotland have needed to be registered with the local authority in which the property they let …

Help to Buy Set to Help the Rental Market

With the introduction of the Help to Buy scheme, many have thought the rental market would decline. Many have believed this idea, simply because, as more people receive help to purchase their own house, the amount of renters will fall. But a report by Property Wire thinks otherwise. Even though more are switching from renting, to ownership, the article claims that: “the UK’s private rented sector is expected to grow by a further one million households sending rents up by 21% over the next five years”. And the author of the article believes that this will have an effect on …

The Help to Buy Scheme: The Ins and Outs

It’ll be something you’ve seen plastered all over the news, the new government ‘help to buy’ scheme (Scotland). But exactly, what is it, and how does it work? Since the collapse of the economy in 2007, the housing market has been a huge casualty, with the numbers of homes being sold falling drastically nationwide. This led to mortgage lenders ceasing to dish out 100% mortgages – which some believe were madness anyway. And the stagnation of the housing market hurt no one more so than first time buyers. Those already on the property ladder, had their current home as an …

Slight Increase in Second Stepping in Scotland

A recent review by Bank of Scotland Homeowners has revealed some pretty good news regarding the Scottish housing market. The review showed that affordability for ‘second steppers’ in Scotland has improved in the past year as a result of higher equity levels. According to an article in Property Reporter, “Housing affordability for Scotland’s second steppers – calculated as the average price of a typical second stepper home, 1 less their current equity position, 2 as a ratio of average earnings – stood at 3.9 times gross annual average earnings in June 2013.” “This measure of affordability has risen significantly over …

Tips For Selling Your Property

A recent survey carried out by Move with Us has shown that 60% of buyers prefer home viewings without owner present. The company surveyed more than 100 independent estate agents from its Partner Network and asked them if potential buyers prefer it if the owner is present during the viewing, with 60% of agents answering ‘no’. But why is this? Do we perhaps feel uncomfortable ‘snooping’ about someone else’s house, critiquing it, when the owner is still under the same roof? Is it a case we are all maybe too polite to give an honest opinion on the property while …
