Plan For High Rise Living At Glasgow Harbour

Of late there’s been a lot of news surrounding high rise flats in Glasgow, most notably the proposed demolition of the Red Road flats which is set to take place next year.

Across the city, it’s become unpopular to live in the classic 1960s and 1970s tower blocks, which has been the catalyst for many of them being reduced to rubble.

However plans have been announced to build a 16-storey development of nearly 350 flats for “midmarket” rent in Glasgow Harbour, with the ‘new generation’ of high rise flats sparking horror from nearby residents.

The Glasgow Harbour area as long been seen as an upmarket destination for luxury living and the idea of high rise flats sharing the landscape with the existing development is one that has ruffled the feathers of local residents.

Speaking to the Evening Times, Jim McGuire, vice chairman of a local home owners’ association, said: “This block will either be the first thing you seen in Glasgow Harbour or the last; it’s a massive monolith designed to provide as many flats as possible in as little space as possible. We don’t think it fits with our neighbourhood at all.”

The firm behind the flats, Dandara, believes it has found a gap in the market for the new development professionals who can’t, or don’t want to, buy.

What this does show is, though, is that living in Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, is very desirable and builders are having to take action to meet demand.

Over the last 12 months the BTL sector has seen a sharp rise, with many opting to rent rather than buy, or simply not having the funds to buy.

This new development, if it comes to fruition, could see another attractive investment opportunity in the city, especially with Glasgow’s trendy west end only minutes away from the area.
