2014, Glasgow’s Year To Shine

It turns out that 2014’s a big year for Glasgow. Not only is there the Commonwealth Games being staged across the city, but Scotland’s largest city is also hosting the MTV Europe Music Awards, and the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony.

However, before all of that, this weekend, 60,000 Glaswegians will have the pleasure of attending a FREE three-day music festival, BBC Radio 1’s BIG Weekend.

Anyone listening to Radio 1 won’t have been able to escape the hype surrounding the event as things get ramped up with the weekend now upon us.

Over the three days an array of global superstars from the world of music is set to descend on the city, between George Square tonight and Glasgow Green on Saturday and Sunday.

Artists set to perform include Coldplay, One Direction, Katy Perry, Kings of Leon, Pharrell Williams, and Kasabian; a real mix of talent to cater to everyones musical needs.

And this isn’t the first BBC Radio event in the city this year. Only last week Radio1’s sister station, 1Xtra, took over the Riverside Museum for an outdoor event which had up to 5,000 revellers attend.

Taking place on Saturday night, and audible to much of the surrounding area, the event included live performances as well as sets from some of the stations DJs and from producers, Breach, Duke Dumont, and DJ Fresh.

So why’s so much happening in Glasgow this year. The city has gone through a rather major period of change and has emerged as one of the leading cities in the world, attracting large corporations, investors, and of course, events organisers.

It really is a great time to be a Glaswegian, there’s an air of optimism and a real feel-good factor spreading across the city.
