Living in Glasgow

Cairn operates in three of Scotland’s largest cities – Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dundee.

We thought it would be a good idea to touch on each city in their very own blog post, giving you information about the city which we hope, if you’re looking to live in that city, will help you make an informed decision.

We thought, with Glasgow 2014 just around the corner, that we’d concentrate on Glasgow for the first in this series of blog posts.

Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow has a lot to offer its inhabitants. Whether you’re a student studying in one of the city’s many colleges or universities; or whether you’re a professional working nine to five.

The lifestyle in Glasgow is a funny one. On one hand, you have the busy hustle and bustle of the big city; but if you venture into the city’s outskirts, you’ll find some lovely, and peaceful suburbs – some perfect for starting and raising a family.

Tranquility isn’t just reserved for the suburbs though. Even in the heart of Glasgow, you can find peace and seclusion, along with beautiful surroundings. Just look no further than the likes of Kelvingrove Park, in the west end.

The city has many schools, colleges and universities which will ensure that anyone wanting to gain good qualifications can do so while living in Glasgow, giving them the best possible start for the life in the working world.

Talking of the likes of students etc, this brings us onto the nightlife. Glasgow boasts many wonderful and diverse nightclubs, bars and restaurants.

Within the city centre, areas such as Merchant City, Royal Exchange Square, Bath Street and Sauchiehall Street boast a great range of traditional pubs, trendy bars and student nightclubs, while the West End’s popular Ashton Lane is filled to the brim with bars such as Radio and Vodka Wodka.

Glasgow has also played host to some of the world’s biggest bands, artists and DJs, playing in venues such as The Arches, Subclub, the famous Barrowlands, and King Tuts Wah Wah Hut – often mentioned as one of the best live venues in the UK.

However, if late nights and alcohol isn’t your cup of tea, there are plenty of other ways to pass the time in Glasgow. The city plays host to many cinemas, including an IMAX screen in the Science Centre, bowling alleys, and comedy clubs – some of which have played host to big names such as Kevin Bridges and Frankie Boyle.

There are also more cultured things to do. You can pay a visit to some of Glasgow’s museums. The likes of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the newly built Riverside Transport Museum are great for days out, and are absolutely free to enter.

Of course, we can’t talk about Glasgow without mentioning the shops. Glasgow has some of the best shopping precincts in Scotland.

In the city centre, you can find many high street names on Argyle Street, Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street. Couple that with city centre’s shopping malls – the St. Enoch Centre, Buchanan Galleries and Princess Square – you’re really spoilt for choice.

Great shopping isn’t just found in the heart of the city though. Shopping centres such as Silverburn, Braehead, Glasgow Fort, and Xscape which includes restaurants, a cinema and indoor ski slope (with real snow) are all just a few minutes drive away.
